Feng Shui History in Brief
Feng Shui History goes back to ancient times (1100-200BC) when
Fu Xi discovered the use of the trigrams.
King Wen is well known for having developed the divination
using the sixty-four hexagrams, which we know as the I Ching.
It is the concept of trigrams that make up the basis of the
flying stars in Feng Shui.
The studies of Feng Shui has evolved over thousands of years,
and is still evolving. It was not until the Chin Dynasty
(265-400CE) that this science was made available to
commoners.
Here is a brief timeline:
- Han Dynasty (210BC) : Ching Wu wrote the "Burial
Classic", developing the form school Feng Shui.
- Jin Dynasty (260) : Guo Po wrote "Treatise of
Burial", containing the basics of traditional Feng
Shui.
- Tang Dynasty (620) : Yang Yun Son founded the Three Period
cycles (San Yuan), and the Three Combinations (San Ho) systems,
describing the significance of land forms on the effects of
Qi of an environment.
- Song Dynasty (910): Hsu Jen Wang
included the Flying Stars ideology. This is the formation of Xuan
Kong Feng Shui.
- Between Ming (1370-1640) and Qing
Dynasty (1640-1911) : Jiang Da Hong wrote extensively about
Flying Stars Feng Shui.
- End Qing Dyansty: Zhang Zhung Shan
And Shen Ju Ren, among many others in history, made contributions
by the literature they wrote and shared.
Different systems adopted (in part) by Modern
Practitioners
- Classical San Yuan, which includes:
- Primordial San Yuan (Three Cycles) which uses the 64 I Ching
hexagrams and compas to analyse mostly burial sites (Yin Feng
Shui).
- San Yuan Xuan Kong which evaluates living spaces taking into
consideration flying stars, time and forms.
- Classical Xuan Kong is further development from the San Yuan
Xuan Kong. It adds in the effects of forms and qi in a
building.
- San Ho uses the San Ho Luo Pan, making emphasis on the right
facing directions.
- Eight Mansions is based on the bagua. It introduces the use of the personal
qua of a person.
