Recording the Facing Direction of A Building With a Compass

Before taking the reading, identify the facing direction of a building.

The facing of a building is often the same direction as the front door. But this is not always the case. Look at the building carefully. Identify which part outside of the building has the more open space, more activity like busy road, and looks like the "front face" of the building. Go into the building, look out the window. The facing of the building normally gives the best open view from the window.

Holding the compass, align yourself with the outside of facing wall (back against it), and take the compass reading. Try to stand in different distances from the wall and take several readings. This is to check the possibility of false readings due to magnetic fields that might be present around the building.

With the direction, and the completion year of building, use the calculator.

Taking an example of a building built in 1982, facing South (180°).
